John’s Wellness Journey – Week Four

This week had its challenges but, I took them all head on and had a powerful week.  This week involved a Cinco De Mayo lunch and I was so proud of myself for watching carefully what I ate. That’s right, I watched it disappear right off of my plate.  I had decided that I would have Buddy’s Pizza and some cowboy caviar and a few other items but would eat it in moderation.  It was one of the best guilt-free lunches I have had in 16 weeks.  I went home that night and busted out a 4.5 mile walk and did the Biggest Loser Cardio DVD.  WOW, that DVD still kills me.  It works muscles that I didn’t know that I had.  Besides the party, I took it upon myself to really step up my length and pace of the daily power walks with my wife.  We are cooking at a pretty good pace and not stopping for breaks.  When I went through the Border Patrol Academy back in the day, a good buddy told me that no matter how fast or how slow you go, just don’t stop moving.  You can rest when you are finished.  I can still hear those PT Instructors screaming at my chubby butt while I ran on those trails in the backwoods of Charleston, SC.  It motivated me back then and it still motivates me today.  Maybe I should hire Carlos to come up for a little 2 week boot camp workout.  I know he would do it if I asked.  Maybe I will go to Washington D.C. and train with him for a week. Either way you look at it, the sweat and burn are real and I am loving it.  I can feel myself getting my wind and able to go farther.  I lost 5.5 lbs this week and I earned each ounce of it with hard work and dedication.  I have a long way to go and I said that I wanted to be in the teens before I leave for Cancun.  I have 10 days to go and a huge week to bust a move and make that happen.  I am going to put in 150% extra effort this week to get there.  Stay tuned……new rule – no more White Castle’s in this office please!!!!!!!

    I am proud of you John! Your efforts are showing! There are temptations of food all around us. But I do know that it’s like a devil sitting on one shoulder and an angel on the other. Listen to the angel :0) I am going to Trader Joe’s today and getting some cucumbers and tomatos for lunches this week. I so enjoy the look and taste of veggies. I do get cravings for “bad” food but actually, not as much any more. I do enjoy slicing up cucumbers like you do with the skin on. They taste much better that way. I’m going to try out Lisa Kinney’s potato and beet chip recipe. Slice them up 1/8″ and toss them with a tablespoon or two of olive oil and viola! Pop them in the microwave and turn them for a bit or pop them in the oven do likewise. Healthy and good for you too, way better than store bought chips with all that hydrogenated oil stuff. Good luck John!! It may be a long road but there will be a rainbow at the end :0)

    I like how you said “you earned every single one of those 5 lbs” – that’s a great attitude and you are right! It’s HARD WORK to lose weight… But, now that you are active on a regular basis and eating well … maintaining your weight loss will be effortless because this is your new LIFESTYLE! Keep up those cardio workouts, planks and continually challenging yourself with weights. 🙂 Great job!!

    I can finally say that my body is getting used to the workouts now like never before. I am sore but it is a good sore. I need to just keep going and not stop. It seems that if I even skip 1 day of workouts that I gain weight. That just irritates the heck out of me. It is also noce to see that here in the workplace that we have healthy snack options. I am not used to that at all. Bagels, lunch sandwiches, brownie tray and the other chocolate items are nearly nonexistant. That explains why we are all getting healthier. Cancun is soon.

    This was a good week. Compliments go a long way when you are trying your best to improve. It was nice to hear people that I haven’t seen in a while say positive words and provide motivating feedback. You look in the mirror and sometimes just see the negative things about yourself. It is really rewarding that I am getting results. It is exciting getting on the scale knowing you worked hard to see if you can improve week to week. I have a game plan in Cancun and I plan to stick to it. I always complain about the scenery and how boring it is to walk in my town but, who can get better than the ocean breeze and tropical weather for a week? I will take advantage of the week off of work to have some fun and remember to run for the cerveza’s.
